witnessed the worst possible nightmare for both fantasy owners and New England Patriots fans alike as QB Tom Brady went down with a torn ACL in the second series of the opening of the Patriots last year against Kansas City Chiefs leaving everyone devastated and wondering what course of action to take next. I could have been one of those owners because I would have chosen myself Brady. I had the fifth selection in my project and it would be Brady or Peyton Manning with that pick (see my previous article "At first the draft RB: Buyer Beware to see why go with the first quarterback) and the owner of the van second selected Manning Brady leaves me with the number 5. After Brady went down Matt Cassel filled in admirably when you have not started a game since high school, leading the Patriots to a 11-5 record despite missing the playoffs. On the other hand, Cassel helped countless fantasy owners to maintain deep playoff runs on the basis of their back to back 400 yard passing performances during the stretch. Well, 2008 is behind us and the children of the 2009 season is fast approaching, Cassel has left previous employers, and Brady is expected to be back in central New England, when the Patriots open the season against Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills on Monday night. All New England reports indicate that Brady is progressing well, but any quarterback coming off a major knee surgery is certainly to be oxidized as any fantasy owner who had the provision mentioned above last year can attest. Last year, I can assure you that I was very frustrated with the lack of Manning in production, while working the kinks out so to speak (luckily I had Chris Johnson, Matt Forte, Calvin Johnson and to weather the storm, while Manning rediscovered his rhythm). Moreover, Manning's injury was not as bad as Brady is, therefore, concern for Brady is even greater. In this sense we will analyze the fantasy prospects of facing the Patriots 2009 season.
How effective will Brady in 2009? Any fantasy owner who drafts Brady hoping to duplicate his 50 TD season in 2007 is dreaming. Also, as I indicated above will be oxidized and Brady will be a question of how long it will take to return to gameplay. Do you really want to take Brady if it will take 4-5 weeks to shake the cob webs out? The length of time that represents at least 1 / 3 of the fantasy season, and if the rest of the list is unable to properly maintain the strength of his season could be over in a blink of an eye. To the defense of Brady still has an amazing variety of weapons to work with Randy Moss and Wes Welker in the prime of their careers and perform at the Pro Bowl. On the other hand, the team also acquired free agent Joey Galloway Buccaneers Tampa Bay, which though old Brady will provide another outlet when Welker and Moss get double coverage. It will be a difficult decision with respect to Brady in the draft day depending on how far you have left. I'm thinking about my project Brady has been somewhere in the 3rd round. Personally, I'm probably leaning towards the transmission of Brady's account of what I have suffered from Manning last year. It's hard to play without a quarterback for the first 4-5 weeks that's basically what to do. In summary, Brady is obviously still a elite QB fantasy, but if you take what you are suspicious of the possible risks they are taking in their attempt to regain his Pro Bowl form.
The Patriots running attack was more relevant last year than in previous years due to knee injury Brady. The Pats as a combined team of 2,278 meters from the most since the Super Bowl season, the Patriots of 1985. To his credit, former offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels orchestrated an offensive last year around the running game and short passing game to give Cassel the best chance of success. Most of this work philosophy as the Patriots had a season nice considering the circumstances, but only below the postseason in the last week of the season. In terms of fantasy potential of the Patriots game is running a collection of players who mostly serve as a reserve for fantasy owners in 2009. Lawrence Maroney has been a big disappointment as coach Bill Belichick drafted him 21st overall at the University of Minnesota in the 2006 draft. To begin, Maroney similar to Reggie Bush struggles to run between the tackles and is mostly a sideline to sideline runner. That is, if healthy, which has been an important turning point Maroney since its inception in the NFL. Maroney has never played a total of 16 games in his career and has never rushed for 900 yards. It has also shown a propensity to fumble not endear him to Belichick. At times throughout his career Maroney has shown flashes of potential, but all views are used to carry out are to provide a RB with a secondary role in banking and fantasy owners with stations unfulfilled. Up the steps and shows that it is a constant threat in the week of the week, I want nothing to do with Maroney unless he falls deeply in my project. Trust me, you should have nothing to do with any of Maroney. Maroney treatment at best a number 3 fantasy RB and more realistic to talk more like a 4 or 5 RB used very sparingly only in emergency situations. The lack of confidence in Maroney led the Pats to sign the former Jacksonville Jaguars RB Fred Taylor this season. Taylor is a Hall of Fame and the limit is the Jaguar's all-time leading rusher which immediately provides the Patriots with depth at the position with Sammy Morris. Morris finished the season with a career-high 727 yards and 7 TD and proved to be a valuable asset down the stretch for fantasy owners with their strong suit. However, the addition of Taylor will reduce Morris brings so do not panic if you see the first products of technology from Texas back to what statistics usually are. BenJarvus Green-Ellis also came out of nowhere a little factor in the Patriots game running last year, but it will be difficult for the team in 2009 with the addition of Taylor. Lamont Jordan, the last member of the Patriots backfield committee shuffled '08 has left Denver. In summary, the Patriots ball carriers once again, is a Motley Crue cast of characters that combine to give the team a good complement to Brady airstrike, but none of them wants to start on your fantasy team in any capacity. In contrast to their running game the Patriots receiving corps provide fantasy owners with some very solid choices on a consistent basis. Moss is still a stallion despite being older. In 2007 Moss posted his best numbers of his career by catching 98 balls for 1493 and a record 23 TD. Moss numbers dipped last year, but that can be attributed to 100% for not having around Brady. With Brady back in the eye twice Moss numbers to rise again and continue to treat him as a fantasy wide receiver secure a decent number of a peak around early to mid 3rd round. Welker also is a solid choice for fantasy and based on his last two seasons has catapulted to a maximum number of fantasy WR. Personally, I think Welker is just shy of that distinction and have classified as a very solid number 2 wide out is definitely worth a round of fourth-fifth selection is needed to get it. As mentioned, the Patriots have also brought Joey Galloway to add a little more of Jack Daniels to the hole so to speak. Galloway is certainly well beyond his prime, but all of GM's NFL swear you can still run and if it is true that some of the pressure of Moss and Welker, who now have a third catcher in line with those is more than capable of stretching the field. Galloway is worth drafting at this point in your career? It all depends on what kind of league that is playing in the rounds that are in your project, and how many teams in the league. In my 12 team league CBS, which has 18 rounds Galloway will likely be drafted in the final rounds, like a wheel. 16 In most leagues and team will be drafted and probably a little early because of the extra equipment. In short, take a chance on if you want to Galloway as a reservation and when I refer to reservation that I mean that is his fourth, fifth, sixth or even WR on your list. Should not be initiated under any circumstances, even as a number of 3 or Flex player WR. No other receiver on the Pats list, including Sam Aiken, Greg Lewis, or anyone else the project warrant consideration as of this moment. I would like to continue on that note when talking about the situation Pats TE. Benjamin Watson is useless as are newly acquired Alex Smith (Tampa Bay) and Chris Baker (NYJ). In short, when contemplating starting your fantasy team in the coming months will focus on Brady cast of wide outs instead of the TE and RB. Stephen Gostkowski has filled the big shoes left by Adam Vinatieri very well and is a worthy fantasy kicker. With the kicker you are looking for teams to move the ball and score many points. The Patiots satisfy both criteria to seriously consider Gostkowski come draft day this August. The Patriots defense has been for years and knows Belichik aging and therefore took steps in the project a couple of weeks by selecting CB Darius Butler of Connecticut and Patrick Chung SS Oregon. There is a good chance that both players are from '09 and that will be associated with S Brandon Meriweather's strong to form a solid young secondary. The Patriots, in my opinion is a central defense of the road you should be able to start from time to time depending on your opponent. They are in no way an elite unit at this stage, but could do much worse too. In summary, for the star power of the Patriots with Brady bounce back and help the owners of a number of much fantasy in the same way as you have done for the last 8-9 years. Avoid the regular budget and will be fine. Well, that is for the AFC East. The next step in my series of pre-2009 fantasy is the AFC South and will start with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Until next time. Have a Bud and a smile.
